Musical May

June 13, 2016

The Jameos del Agua is a year round tourist attraction on Lanzarote, with plenty to bring visitors through its doors during the day. But it is also an exceptional venue for the occasional cultural or music event, thanks to its wonderful auditorium created out of a volcanic cave. The rock walls of the auditorium give it some of the best acoustics for the performance of live music.

During May, there are two occasions when this prestigious theatre opens its doors during the evening. The first event is an operatic concert featuring Spain’s leading soprano Ainhoa Arteta alongside homegrown talent, Francisco Corujo. This takes place on Saturday 14th May from 8.00pm.

Ainhoa Arteta hails from the Basque region in Spain, where her father was the founder of the Coral Eresoinka, a leading classical choir in the Gipuzkoa region. Her training began when she was 12 years old, followed by years of study in both Italy and New York and she has since performed in many of the most famous opera houses around the world, including at Covent Garden in London.

Ainhoa will be joined on stage by Lanzarote tenor, Francisco Corujo and both singers will be accompanied by Italian pianist Marco Evangelisti. Tickets for this event start at €40 per person and are available from all the ticket offices of the Centres of Art and Culture on Lanzarote.

Ballet lovers will be similarly pleased, as the Jameos auditorium has also been selected as the venue for a performance by the Sharon Fridman ballet company. Sharon Fridman is a young Israeli dancer and choreographer who has developed an interest in the process of movement and vertebration – which is the formation of vertebrae. From this initial focus, his company explores the balletic possibilities along several themes: verticality, fall, need, impulse, contact and naturalness.

For their performance on Lanzarote, the Sharon Fridman company will be accompanied by twenty local dancers who will be participating in a four day workshop leading up to the performance at the Jameos del Agua along the theme of Free Fall. The event takes place on Saturday 21st May at 9.00pm and tickets are priced at €20 per person. These can be purchased from the ticket office at the Jameos or through Touristticket.
